Avoid feeding the fish.
The big hump in the normal curve, the Everybody, is like a big school of fish. Something glitters interestingly over there, and the whole school shifts as if one animal.
The glitter is fashion. Or media noise. I want to be more lasting than that.
If someone whose business is media noise decides that what I do is fashionable, and wants to shine the fishy spotlight on me for a bit, I suppose that's fine.
But don't expect me to change what I'm doing. I chose this path regardless of what the school thinks, and I'm not going to feed the fish just to stay in the spotlight.
Seth Godin agrees.
